A survey that was published in a book, “The Day America Told the Truth” says that 90 percent of people in the United States lie routinely and 36 percent confess that they tell important lies.
“Americans are willing to lie at the drop of a hat. Lying is part of their lives. People say what others want to hear,” said Co-author James Patterson.
He classifies lies as “dark lies,” the ones that hurt other people and “trivial lies,” those that include insincere compliments on dinner or clothes.
Patterson found that 86 percent lie regularly to parents, 75 percent lie to friends, 73 percent lie to siblings and 69 percent lie to spouses.
He also found that 81 percent lie about their feelings, 43 percent lie about income and 40 percent lie about sex.
The survey also asked people what they tell truth about and it is found that 51 percent say they see no reason to marry, 29 percent say they aren’t sure they still love their spouse and 31 percent admit they are having or have had an extramarital affair.
